Prof. Xu Kecheng interpreted the new concept of living with cancer at the book launch

In the morning of July 30, 2016, the book Living with Cancer written by Prof. Xu Kecheng, chief president of Jinan University School of Medicine affiliated Fuda Cancer Hospital and honorary president of Asian Society of Cryosurgery was launched at Guangzhou Book Center. The book launch was hosted by Guangzhou book center and Guangzhou Publishing House and was co-hosted by Jinan University School of Medicine Affiliated Fuda Cancer Hospital. At the book launch, Prof. Xu introduced to the public the concept of his new book Living with Cancer, meaning to make cancer a controllable chronic disease with elimination and reform.

According to statistics, there are 8,550 newly diagnosed cancer cases every day in China and one out of 7-8 people dies of cancer, which have made everybody become cancer-adverse. In this regard, Prof. Xu noted, “As cancer will become the main cause of human death in the future, it is not advisable to become cancer-adverse. Instead, in the fight against cancer, we should not only focus our attention on the tumor itself but also should regard the patient as a whole. Therefore, cancer should be comprehensively treated as a chronic disease with the approach of elimination and reform. ”

Since the initiation of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital in 2003, Prof. Xu Kecheng has been taking advanced cancer patients as the main treatment object and taking prolonging patient’s life and improving their life quality as main targets. Under his leadership, Fuda Cancer Hospital took the lead in China to have introduced such advanced technologies as argon-helium cryosurgery and NanoKnife for cancer treatment and has thus formed its therapeutic characteristics featured with local ablation, microvascular intervention, and combined immunotherapy for cancer. A combination of local treatment and systemic treatment is designed to control the tumor and care for the patients so as to improve patients’ life quality and prolong their lifespan.

However, Xu Kecheng, who has been working in the cause of cancer treatment for several decades, was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma in 2006. He has been maintaining a positive attitude and cooperating with treatment since his cancer diagnosis. Ten years have passed, he is still healthy as he used to be. His cancer experience and years of clinical practice in cancer treatment have prompted him to write the book Living with Cancer. Prof. Xu Kecheng said his book is an attempt to make people realize that cancer is a type of chronic disease and cancer cells cannot be overkilled; cancer is not fearful as long as cancer patients can keep a positive attitude, uphold a correct concept, adopt innovative strategy and receive appropriate treatment, they can finally reach a peaceful coexistence with cancer. 

The book launch has attracted a large number of people at Guangzhou book center. Dr. Lin from Vancouver, Canada said he very much agrees with prof. Xu’s anti-cancer concept. He would buy 1,000 copies to spread the concept of living with cancer. He is also planning to translate the book from Chinese into English and brought it to Canadian doctors, enabling them to learn Chinese-style anti-cancer treatment.

Many citizens have had a new understanding of anti-cancer treatment after listening to prof. Xu’s lecture. Mr. Qiu said his father was newly diagnosed with lung cancer sizing up to 1.8cmx5.4cm and is asking around the best treatments possible. He was deeply inspired after listening to Prof. Xu’s interpretation of anti-cancer treatment and bought a copy on the spot. He is planning to use the ideas in the book to encourage his father to be strong and optimistic in the face of cancer.

Twenty-five experts of Jinan University attended conference at FUDA

Jinan University Medical School Scientific Research Cooperation Invitation Conference was held in the multi-purpose hall of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital in the afternoon of March 30, 2016. Mr. Ye Wencai, the Vice President of Jinan University, designated Prof. Dong Jun, the Deputy Director of the Department of Clinical Medicine to attend the conference with a delegation of 25 experts, who have made in-depth exchanged with experts and doctors at FUDA on cryosurgery, NanoKnife therapy and immunotherapy for cancer.

The First Wave of “Heart- Warming Action”—Giving Herbal Tea at Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital in Haizhu District, Which Attracted Hundreds of Residents

Recently, flu is ravaging. The number of flu patients’ admission at hospitals of Guangzhou increases dramatically.

According to the registered data of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital out-patient department in Haizhu District, out-patient amount was more than 3000 person-time from February 29 to March 28, rising 67% from last month. Among the patients, most got flu.

In order to help neighbor residents prevent from flu, Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital out-patient department in Haizhu District held “Heart-Warming Action” of providing herbal tea that could prevent flu, testing blood pressure service and health consultation for neighbor residents. This activity attracted hundreds of people. 

There were so many people waiting in line for herbal tea before 9 am. They very appreciated this activity held by Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital. And they said: “The health care activity is very helpful in preventing flu. More such activities should be conducted.”

Knowledge of flu prevention in spring 

Director of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital out-patient department in Haizhu District Zhang Jianhua said: “In spring, with the rise of temperature, everything rouses up from sleeping. The activities of pathogenic microorganisms such as virus, bacteria etc. are vibrant relatively. And the flu incidence rate is up to 5%~15%.”

What are the main symptoms of flu?

Director Zhang said: “The main symptoms of flu including intolerance of cold, cough, sore throat, running nose, headache courbature and arthralgia etc.”

How to judge whether you get flu? 

Director Zhang noticed that if you develop intolerance of cold, fever, headache and exhaustion, perhaps you get flu. Flu is self-limited. And generally, the patients get well on their own in three to five days. But if the symptoms are severe, please go to hospital for seeking doctor and taking medicine accordingly.

He said, there is no certain group of people susceptible to flu. However, children under 12 years old, old man and weak people are easier to get flu. And they are more likely to have complications after getting flu. For example, some patients with low immunity, long-term chronic respiratory diseases or cancer patients after having chemotherapy, they are susceptible to have pneumonia and vital myocarditis etc. It’s very dangerous.

Is there any way of flu prevention in spring?

1. Keep good health habits. Wash your hands before meal. After using the toilet, remember wash hands. And wash your hands after sneezing, coughing, cleaning of nose and coming back home. Don’t spit. Clothes and quilts should be changed, washed and hanged out regularly.

2. As for infectious respiratory disease, most effective way is keeping indoor air circulate well. Open the window and ventilate the windows. It’s better than air disinfectant.

3. Avoid going to populated public places with poor ventilation.

4. Go to outside to inhale fresh air. Do exercise such as walk, yoga, and gymnastics and so on for stretching and strengthening physique. 

5. Have a regular life. Receiving enough sleep is important to improve immunity.

6. Change clothes according to temperature. Don’t reduce too many clothes suddenly.

7. Don’t take spicy and greasy foods. More water and choose lean meat, eggs, honey and fresh vegetables. 

8. If you have respiratory disease, seek a doctor as soon as possible. Don’t take medicine casually.

Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital, Beijing Genomics Institute Join Hands for Cancer Treatment

In the morning of March 16, 2016, Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital and BGI (Beijing Genomics Institute) Group signed a Strategic Alliance Agreement with an aim of enhancing the cooperation between the two sides to make a breakthrough in performing accurate cancer treatment and implementing effective postoperative monitoring. BGI enjoys enormous advantages in the building and application of big platform while its research on diseases needs data support and intellectual support from hospital. The marriage between FUDA and BGI is of great importance to improve the cure rate of cancer and bring benefits to the society in the end.

Since its initiation in 1999, BGI has developed itself into the biggest genomic research center in the world. It has carried out research on over 12,000 samples of more than 20 types of cancer at home and abroad. At present, it has developed cooperation with more than 100 scientific research centers and more than 20 enterprises and institutions. It has launched research on birth defect, metabolic disease and malignant tumors. Hence, it hopes to cooperate with Fuda Cancer Hospital to launch Cross-Omics Plan on One Million Cases of Tumors so as to realize the calibration, qualitative determination, location, quantification, timing and strategy-making for tumors. 

Zhao Lijian, Vice President of BGI noted that conventional treatments for cancer, such as operation, chemotherapy, etc. cannot eliminate cancer radically. The scientific treatment method should be to identify the type of cancer from diagnosis and then analyze at the genetic level which drugs that are most suitable for the type of cancer diagnosis. “Beyond that, we hope to be able to identify the possibility of tumor recurrence and metastases by non-invasive gene test, which is easy in operation and low in cost.”

Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital Holding Free Clinic for Sending Health to Neighbor Residents

In the morning of 27th February, weather got nicer since it had kept cloudy for a week. And it became hilarious at Happiness Square of Tangde Garden in Tianhe District. Walking out of office, doctors of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital went into neighbor community for holding free clinic, spreading knowledge about how to prevent common disease and cancer, popularizing National Health Insurance Policy and facilitating residents to make FUDA as National Health Insurance fixed hospital.

“Role model of the times”, chief president of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital Xu Kecheng also went to the site of free clinic and solved people’s problem about cancer prevention. In an interview with reporters of Guangdong TV Station and Guangzhou TV Station, he said that cancer has been the leading killer nowadays, but people still lack of awareness. Medical technology becomes more and more advanced. For example, except three conventional cancer treatments including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, there are cryoablation, nanoknife therapy (irreversible electroporation), immunotherapy etc. But these are just remedies. Taking preventive measures is the key.

Taking example for lung cancer, the No.1 killer, Xu Kecheng said, whether man or woman, morbidity and mortality of lung cancer is highest. Lung cancer prevention demands all man to quit smoking. Meanwhile, related departments of the government should take actions to improve air quality and reduce haze pollution. Besides, people should attach importance to screening for cancer prevention. Having treatment early makes difference on treatment effect.

In the afternoon of Mar 12, 2013, a donation ceremony was held in the 7th floor of our hospital for the donations from Mr. Wang Xinzhao to “Xu Kecheng Cancer-Research Fund”. In the very first of this year, Mr. Wang Xinzhao, chairman of Huasheng Electric Co. Ltd in Zhengzhou, Henan province, chanced upon the book “Telling the Truth to Cancer Patients” of professor Xu. After reading, he was deeply moved. He said that the time he spent on reading this book was much longer than what he spent on travelling. From this book, he found not only truths but also the power and spirit for cancer sufferers, as well as the hopes and encouragements for each cancer patient. He believed that every patient would get confident and positive to fight against tumors after reading this book. Despite several setbacks, he finally came from Shanghai to our hospital, attracted by Fuda hospital’s frame, finding that we are worthy of the reputation with great staffs. Suddenly he did feel at home, and become more confident to fight against tumors.

Prof. Xia Yuting, Former President of ShenYang Military General Hospital Spoke Highly of FUDA for Performing Over 10,000 Cases of Cryosurgery and Being the First to Have Performed NanoKnife Therapy in Mainland of China

On November 2015, Xia Yuting, a nationally renowned digestive disease expert, former Vice President of Shenyang Military General Hospital paid a visit to Guangzhou Fuda Hospital, during which he spoke highly of FUDA for “taking a lead in technology for cancer and bringing benefit to people around the world”. The meeting was also attended by Xu Kecheng, Chief President of Fuda Cancer Hospital, Zuo Jiansheng, the CEO of Guangzhou Fuda Medical Investment Management Limited Liability Company, Liu Jianguo, General Manager of Guangzhou Fuda Medical Investment Management Limited Liability Company, and Prof. Niu Lizhi, Executive President of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital.

Prof. Xia Yuting was graduated from Jilin University of Medical Science (current Norman Bethune University of Medical Science) in 1963. He was the former Vice President and head of Medical Administration Department of ShenYang Military General Hospital with the title of senior colonel. At present, he serves as the expert of Evaluation Center of Drug Pricing National Development and Reform Commission, expert of National Medical Malpractice Identification Committee, and adviser of China Society of Digestive Endoscopy. He is also a doctoral supervisor and chief physician.

Prof. Xia Yuting stayed at Fuda Cancer Hospital for three hours, during which he personally experienced the hospital environment, visited the medical facilities, and conversed with medical workers. After General Liu Jianguo introduced the hospital, Prof. Xia Yuting emotionally said, “We are here to study the way you run a hospital. One of my accompanying friends also wants to establish a hospital. I told him that firstly he should establish a specialized hospital; secondly, he should established a hospital for advanced cancer patient; thirdly, he should learn from Prof. Xu Kecheng.

 

He said that he once paid a visit to the hospital that Prof. Xu Kecheng established in Shekou, Shenzhen. Compared to that hospital, the current Fuda Cancer Hospital is a much better “upgraded version” of the old one. Prof. Xia Yuting said, “It takes courage to establish a private hospital in the first place” when he recalled that Prof. Xu Kecheng quit his secure job in public hospital and established a private hospital.

 

When he learned that Fuda Cancer Hospital has been committing itself to commonwealth undertakings and donated over 10 million RMB after Wenchuan and Yushu earthquakes, he said, “I used to believe that a hospital cannot seek development without fund, but my way of thought is totally changed after I visited FUDA and learned the status quo of FUDA. I realized that the perspective on money itself is important, but money is not a prerequisite for running a hospital. What strike me the most is the special spirit that Fuda Cancer Hospital has presented.” 

He said, “Xu Kecheng and I have been friends for over 30 years. I come here to visit my old pal and witness with my own eyes the achievement that FUDA has made. I believe that Prof. Xu Kecheng has been leading the development of the hospital under the guidance of CPC. The fact that he has been committing himself to the development of the hospital and to the commonwealth undertakings is not just a spur of the moment. Thanks to his political orientation, he has been devoting himself to servicing the people with advanced medical science and technology over the past 30 years and more. I am firmly convinced that to treat patient with excellent medical skill is the political orientation of all medial workers. Prof. Xu Kecheng has done what a medical worker is supposed to do.”

 

In recent years, Chief President Xu Kecheng has won many honors, such as “Role Model of the Times”, “Award Nomination of the 5th National Moral Models” and etc. Prof. Xia Yuting said, “after I learned all the honors that Prof. Xu has earned in recent years, I would like to say he has been leading a tough life over the past few years.” he further added, “there has been discussion going on in the field of digestive disease community that Xu Kecheng has made a great fortune in recent years. Executive President Niu Lizhi introduced that medical workers at FUDA performed that first NanoKnife therapy for pancreatic cancer patient in Mainland of China on July 1. The number of NanoKnife therapy cases that FUDA has performed accounts for over 50% in Mainland of China.

 

Prof. Xia Yuting summarized that Fuda has carried out over ten thousand cases of cryosurgery and has been leading the way in the field of NanoKnife therapy in China. He said, FUDA has been seeking development with excellent skills and bringing well-being to patients with noble morality”. General Manager Liu Jianguo stated that “there is an Indonesian patient who has been to our hospital for over 40 times within 8 years. Over 60%  of our patients have been to FUDA for more than one time. They would never come back if we do not have advanced technology.”

It’s not hard to see a doctor in China, at least in a second-class hospital. But most of patients are not willing to seek treatment in a second-class hospital but a famous one. Why common people are not willing to seek treatment in second-class hospitals? I found the answer after I paid a visit to Fuda Cancer Hospital. The main reasons are that some second-class hospitals don’t have advanced technology while some don’t have quality service that can attract patients. The recipe behind FUDA’s success lies in its core medical technology, quality service and outstanding management.”

The First Nano Knife (irreversible electroporation) Treatment for Cancer in Mainland of China Completed in Guangzhou

In the morning of July 1, 2015, a special operation was undergoing in the operation room of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital. The patient lying on the operation table was a 61-year-old man from Middle East. With the assistance of renowned abdominal surgeon--Prof. Li Chaolong, Dr. Niu Lizhi cut open the patient’s upper abdominal with adept skill, separated stomach and intestinal canal to expose pancreas. A 4.5x5.0cm large quasi circular mass is found. Dr. Niu put the ultrasonic surgical probe on the mass and an uneven high- density echo displayed on the ultrasound screen. Under the guidance of ultrasound image, Dr. Niu placed a special electrode needle (called main needle) into one side of the mass and inserted its tip to the bottom of the mass; then two auxiliary electrode needles were inserted into the other side and the center of the mass separately. The three needles formed a tripod shape with the distance between each standing at 2cm.

Beside the operating table, an engineer was adjusting the medical equipment called “NanoKnife.” On the screen displayed flashing electric pulse, which meant that the equipment was at operational readiness. Beneath the NanoKnife was a special electrocardiogram equipment, which displayed the patient’s cardiac rhythm.

The treatment started. Dr. Niu ordered: electric shock. According to the premeditated plan, three groups of electric shocks with 1500V voltage and 70 microseconds pulse length are administered with 90 pulses in each group. With the pulses pushing in, the ultrasound screen displayed that the original high-density echo of the tumor was getting lower.

After the above-mentioned procedures were done, Dr. Niu changed the position of two auxiliary electrode needles and electric pulses were administered again. Then, three electrode needles were pulled up and electric pulses were administered again. After repeating the process for five times, the tumor had fully received electric pulses. The CT scan (contrast agent enhancement) on the second day showed whole tumor necrosis.

This is a memorable moment. On this day, FUDA succeed in treating pancreatic cancer by adopting the world’s latest ablation technology--irreversible electroporation for the first time in Guangzhou, also in China. The technology got its name “Nano Knife” because it would make nanoscale membrane perforation in targeted tissue or cells.

As a significant progress in tumor treatment of the 21^st century, tumor ablation has presented an effective treatment and even radical chance for patients with unresectable tumor or patients who cannot tolerate operation. The most frequently used technologies include thermal ablation (radio-frequency and microray) and cryoablation (Argon-Helium Knife and liquid nitrogen). Nano Knife is a special ablation technology belonging to neither thermal ablation nor cryoablation. If ablation could be compared to the “crown “of local treatment for cancer, then Nano Knife could be compared to the “pearl” on the “crown”. The basic rationale of Nano Knife is that ablation probes release microsecond high voltage pulse that breaks tumor cell membrane so as to form nanoscale irreversible electroporation and finally kill targeted cells (cancer cells).

A series of experiments and clinical research indicate that compared with other ablation technologies, Nano Knife has the following unique advantages: the ablation of tissue is selective. The ablation destroys only cells and does no harm to vascular wall, nerve, trachea, bronchus, gallbladder, intestinal canal, and ureter; boundaries of ablation area is clear, which is extremely important for small volume pancreas; ablation does not generate energy nor rely on it, and it is not influenced by the blood flow of adjacent big vessels, such as celiac artery and aorta; the death of cells is not necrosis but apoptosis, which could stimulate anticancer immune responses; the ablation requires short treatment time. It just takes 5 minutes to ablate 3.0 cm large tumor and anesthesia time will also shorten accordingly, which is conducive to postoperative recovery. The ablation process can be clearly displayed on ultrasound, CT or MR, thus ensuring the maximal effect of ablation.

Developed and manufactured by America AngiDymanics company, Nano Knife was approved by America FDA for “soft tissue tumor ablation”, which was hailed by experts around the world. European Union, Australia, Canada has also successively approved Nano Knife for application. As of today, over 100 key tumor hospitals have adopted this technology in treating more than 6,000 cases. Treated tumors are located in pancreas, lungs, kidney, prostate, and other parenchymal organs as well as in soft tissues. It is especially applicable to tumors near big vessels, hepatic hilum, gallbladder, bile ducts, and ureter. According to literature, Nano Knife is of great value in treating pancreatic cancer.

Nano Knife can not only be applied to surgery, such as laparotomy. Electrodes needles can also be inserted into tumor through puncture point and percutaneous ablation can be administered under the guidance of CT or ultrasound. In recent days, under the guidance of CT and ultrasound, doctors in FUDA have carried out percutaneous Nano Knife ablation on a postoperative gastric cancer metastasis and a pancreatic head tumor.

In June, 2015, China approved Nano Knife for tumor treatment. In order to apply Nano Knife into clinical treatment in an early date, one year before it is approved by China, Dr. Niu Lizhi has led experts and relevant medical workers to study stacks of literature and arranged several study tours in America. They compiled the first monograph about Nano Knife in China, New Technique of Cancer Ablation: Irreversible Electroporation published by Shanghai Science and Technology Literature in 2014. In cooperation with overseas institutions, experts and medical workers in FUDA carried out a large number of Nano Knife ablation experiments on animals, studied its influence and safety on such key structures as nerves, vessels, bile ducts and ureter and published the first paper about Nano Knife in China on  Journal of Interventional Radiology.

It is reported that the Nanoknife system is a nonthermal and novel minimally-invasive technology for tumor ablation. It is also known as Irreversible Electroporation (IRE). Its rationale goes like as follows: during the procedure, high electric-field and ultrashort pulses are given to destroy lipid bilayer structure of cancer cell membrane and form numerous irreversible nano-sized pores in the cell membrane. Cell membrane permeability will be changed to allow molecules of different sizes free access to cells, which will lead to cell death. As it causes no heat island effect, it inflicts no incomplete treatment or thermal injury. Tumor cells besides blood vessels can also be completely eliminated.IRE is formally approved by China for clinical application in June 2015. Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital became the first in Mainland of China to introduce NanoKnife system. On July 2, the medical team led by Dr. Niu Lizhi performed the first NanoKnife therapy for pancreatic cancer, which has delivered remarkable curative effects. Under the leadership of Niu Lizhi, medical team at FUDA has carried out NanoKnife therapy for over 40 cancer patient, all of which have produced remarkable curative effects.

On the conference, Niu Lizhi pointed out that NanoKnife therapy for cancer falls into the category of minimally invasive treatment and inflicts no injuries to such tissue structures as blood vessels, bile duct and nerves adjacent to tumor. Electrode of 1mm in diameter is inserted into tumor percutaneously and then computer technology calculates and predicts the location and size of electric field. Electrodes releases high electricity and ultrashort pulses to form strong electric field and make numerous irreversible nano-sized pores in the cell membrane, which will lead to cell death. After treatment, human body will activate healing response, absorb apoptotic cell and replace tumor with new cells.

At present, NanoKnife therapy has made remarkable achievement in the field of pancreatic cancer treatment. Niu Lizhi said pancreatic cancer is a highly malignant digestive tract tumor with high mortality. The reason behind the high mortality is that 80% pancreatic cancer patients have local progression or metastases upon diagnosis, thus the tumor is unresectable and not responding well to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. As IRE is free from the influence of ambient temperature, it can effectively ablate tissues surrounding great vessels, limit damage to extracellular matrix and protect great vessels and bile duct structure. Therefore, IRE is the best treatment for pancreatic cancer that is adjacent to such lumen as portal vein, deep vein, and common bile duct.

The Forum on Green Rehabilitation of Cancer began after the opening ceremony ended. Experts from China, America and European countries gave presentations on cancer prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Professor Karen Basen Engquist from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center shared the experience in cancer prevention and rehabilitation, whilst Professor Chen Guangyao from Taiwan delivered a speech on "cancer screening and prevention measures", focusing on experience sharing. Professor Qiao Youlin from Department of Cancer Institute & Epidemiology of Chinese Peking Union Medical College of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences shared the research progress of epidemiology and prevention of cancer in China. President Shi Anli of Chinese Cancer Rehabilitation Society introduced the current status, existing problems and developing direction of overall cancer rehabilitation in China. Academician Fan Daiming from the Chinese Academy of Engineering was the last speaker who made a report on the nature of cancer. He believes that the key molecular event (CAKMEs) in tumor evolution is a core clinical problem.
